Free at 4 and 5 months. Babies aged 4 and 5 months can start with our free Drowning Prevention Awareness classes. These classes give parents an orientation to the skills that keep a child safer in and around water. A child can drown silently in as little as 5cm of water, and everything you learn adds another layer of protection. From 6 months of age babies move into Starfish classes, with a parent still in the water.
About Starfish
Starfish is where swimming starts at Myswim. A parent or carer is in the water with their child for every lesson, and a qualified Myswim instructor guides you both through a carefully designed program that teaches water awareness and the very first swimming skills.
The program is designed to expand your child's learning through play, songs and repetition. Small classes mean the instructor can give one-on-one help to every family.
What we work on
- Getting comfortable in the water: entries, exits and being held safely
- Conditioning for going under water, using cues, songs and gentle submersions
- Floating on the back and front with parent support
- Kicking, reaching and turning back to the wall
- Parent skills: safe holds, support positions and water safety at home
Moving up
- Your child is happy in the water and confident with a parent's support
- Around 2 to 3 years of age, your child moves into Seahorse pre-school classes without a parent in the water
